Vita Plus Corporate Headquarters

Madison, Wisconsin

The regional feed supplier and agribusiness consulting corporation sought to demolish a ramshackle auto service station on an adjacent parcel in order to expand employee parking. As project manager, Andy Albright worked closely with The Renschler Company and City of Madison planning staff to provide a “superior landscape” at this prominent intersection on Fish Hatchery Road just north of the Beltline.

The design solution demonstrates the Corporation’s commitment to a quality environment by using plant species ideally suited to this non-irrigated, commercial site. The plan places special emphasis on balancing the City’s requirements for screening parking with the Owner’s concern for employee safety. Layered groundcovers and low shrubs soften the ground plane and help reduce maintenance costs, while high-branching canopy trees help cool the parking surface. For both safety and to enhance the viewshed from the intersection into the site, the vertical space between groundcover and tree branches is purposely left clear to maintain sight lines.

Open space at the site’s corner, punctuated with a small landscape bed, extends an expression of the corporation’s core values into the landscape. Here, limestone blocks recycled locally from a demolished railroad bridge capture the spirit of local industry.
