Republic Services Consolidated District Headquarters

Indianapolis, Indiana
Client: Republic Services of Indiana

Located adjacent to a portion of Indiana’s historic Central Canal, the consolidated corporate headquarters and operations facility is oriented to celebrate and connect to the future extension of the Indianapolis greenway system. The careful arrangement of facilities and circulation within the site safely unite a diverse blend of land uses, including corporate offices, vehicle maintenance and recycling facilities. This urban brownfield redevelopment project received an A Monumental Affair Award for Project/Community Development Award from Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Inc. in 2004.

As project landscape architect from design development through implementation, Andy Albright coordinated the design of the site’s greenspaces and pedestrian zones. At the junction of the site’s primary vehicular access routes, a formal planting punctuates the threshold by combining geometric forms with native plant material. As visitors and employees continue into the site native meadow plantings and lowland trees create a naturalistic buffer between the industrial use and the canal. An arcade of oak trees guides visitors to the guest parking area and main entrance plaza, where patterns and colors from the building’s interior reach out into the site to invite people in.

The success of this award-winning project was a true collaborative effort between many design disciplines. Andy’s attention to detail in the landscape and on the ground plane helped connect the building to the site and create a great experience from the entry drive to the front door and all points in between.
