Collett Park Renovation
Terre Haute, Indiana Client: Terre Haute Parks and Recreation
The 21-acre park dates back to the late nineteenth century and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At the heart of the park stands a Dancing Pavilion that, in its early days, also served as a public meeting house and polling place. Today the park continues to enrich the lives of local historic district residents and visitors from the region. In 2003 the City of Terre Haute and the Collett Park Neighborhood Association launched a planning process to restore the historic pavilion and park. As project landscape architect, Andy Albright led the site research, analysis and design efforts.

Andy played an integral role in the master plan’s development, from research and analysis through conceptual design and planning. His skills in both writing and graphic communication captured and communicated the vision for the park in an inspiring way that keeps us all looking forward to the day when the potential for this great community asset will finally be realized.

The master plan establishes a clear path to preserving the rich heritage of Collett Park while continuing to meet the demands of a modern community recreation facility. The plan addresses accessibility and wayfinding throughout the site, reinforces pedestrian and bicycle use within the park and identifies historical interpretive opportunities. Many of the key features of the park’s original 1883 plan that have disappeared over the years will be redeveloped or reinterpreted, including the abandoned “carriage path” loop, the Central Garden and a band shell.
