Plandesign specializes in sustainability, safety, accessibility and context-appropriate design. Our projects include but are not limited to urban spaces and streetscapes, parks and recreation facilities, religious facilities, academic and corporate campuses, outdoor living/gathering spaces, commercial and retail sites, and multi-family and mixed-use developments. Firm Philosophy
Plandesign was founded on three very broad concepts “LAND, VISION, PASSION.” These concepts form the basis of the philosophy through which we serve our clients and form partnerships. The basic ideas are that...
Land is not a blank slate. Land has a story—a complex interaction of existing conditions and influences that shape our perception of place and impact its future.
Land is not static. Land is dynamic—events thousands of years in the making, such as the historic movement of the glaciers across the Midwest, and events that may last only days or even minutes, such as rain storms or tornadoes have shaped and continue to reshape our land. Yet no other force reshapes our land as dramatically as human land development. Each time we choose to modify the makeup of a site, whether in materials or grade, we change the dynamics of not only that site but all it’s connected to.
Land is not isolated. Land is connected—no matter what scale, land is always part of something larger while at the same time made up of many things smaller.
Land is not only connected. Land connects—land connects people through common interests and complete happenstance, in public gathering spaces or thoroughfares, in private places of quiet refuge or playful activity. Land connects people to nature in settings as vastly different as urban streetscapes and rural parks. Land connects people to history through the interpretation of natural landforms, historic land uses and cultural artifacts.
So what about Land and the future? The future of land is our responsibility. That’s where VISION comes in. What do you envision? What do you see when you imagine the future for a site, a campus, a corridor, a community or a region?
Why is that future more important than the future we would reach otherwise? Here’s where PASSION comes in. Passion is the “Why.” It’s what drives us to voluntarily incite change, knowing that doing so is never simple.
